Self Confidence and Successful Sporting Performance

One of the most consistent findings in the high performance literature is the significant correlation between self-confidence and successful sporting performance. Confident individuals tend to be more skilled and effective in using cognitive resources necessary for sporting success. Confident individuals remain task-diagnostic by focusing on solutions to problems in the face of obstacles, whereas less confident individuals are more likely to become self-diagnostic and focus on their perceived inadequacies. Furthermore, confidence has been found to influence the coping strategies of athletes. Specifically, athletes who possess a strong belief in their ability are able to peak under pressure and cope successfully with adverse situations during competition.
